About Chase Farm Hospital

One of the most digitally advanced hospitals in the UK, Chase Farm in Enfield, has recently undergone a £200 million redevelopment, reopening with state-of-the-art operating theatres and improved accessibility for patients.

Orbis provided the perimeter security during the redevelopment, and we are delighted that our contribution in improving the safety and security of this superb new facility has recognised Orbis as a finalist for ‘Project of The Year’ at the 2024 UK Fencing Industry Awards.

Meeting our customers’ needs

Although the hospital building itself has undergone significant work, the surrounding area had been somewhat neglected, presenting multiple potential threats to site security and public safety. We were approached by the client to secure and rectify the exterior areas, which were particularly vulnerable to accidents, trespass, material theft, vandalism, and arson.

Following our initial site survey and consultation with the client, it became clear there were several issues which needed addressing urgently:

  • The main site itself was vulnerable to intruders due to the ability to scale the fence using the railings.
  • The main site was currently being used as an overflow car park and was therefore insecure. Access was achieved easily due to the gate not being locked.
  • The electrical substation was easily accessible and vulnerable to cable theft due to gaps at the base of the access gate.
  • Existing gates provided a convenient climbing aid for intruders wishing to scale the fence.
    Significant gaps under the existing access gate were large enough for an adult to crawl under.
  • The existing mesh fence was missing multiple panels.
  • Waste materials had been left on site causing a potential fire hazard, especially considering the dry conditions.
  • The pond area although currently dry, could potentially pose a hazard during periods of increased precipitation and needed to be secured.
  • Uneven surfaces posed a trip or fall hazard to unauthorised intruders
  • The existing timber fence around parts of the site were in danger of collapse – certain areas needed urgent removal and repair due to broken fence posts.

Providing real solutions

Due to the site being fully active, our teams needed to consider the deployment plan, supply of product, deliveries, and operational hours. Our ongoing work needed to fit around busy foot traffic and include a one-way system for vehicles.

Using two of our regional teams, we facilitated an effective installation, minimising disruption to the local facilities.

The services supplied included:

  • A fully recyclable V-Mesh temporary fencing system
  • Manpower for ground preparation
  • Recycling timber
  • Waste removal from the site
  • Temporary CCTV security including Sentry Protect

Results that matter

Once the main scope of works was complete, our operations team implemented further initiatives to maximise our environmental sustainability and collaborative processes:

  • Rather than disposing of the rotten timber / hoarding via local recycling stations, it was decided that a container on site would minimise the need for multiple vehicle drops.
  • We installed Vmesh fencing onsite, which is known for its environmentally friendly properties and recyclability.
  • Locally based resources and supply chains were used wherever possible to deliver the project, significantly reducing fuel usage and CO2 footprint.
  • Care needed to be taken due to the uneven grounds (which our teams levelled) and debris was cleared and removed from site, making it safe for future use,
  • Our teams worked closely with representatives of the local school to explain what we were doing and arranged our works around them to remove as many interferences with their day-to-day operations as possible.
