Overview

Our client, a rural landowner with 1,000 acres of mixed-use property, was dealing with a range of security issues, such as trespassing, poaching, and fly-tipping. However, a more pressing problem had recently emerged: people were accessing his land to ride motocross bikes through his woodlands, creating a serious threat with potentially far-reaching consequences.

These incidents not only intimidated and endangered his livestock, but as the landowner, he could also be held liable for any injuries suffered by the trespassing motocross riders or anyone they might accidentally harm. Additionally, he was worried that the routes through his forest would gain popularity due to the trespassers regularly sharing their rides on social media.

Meeting our customers’ needs

Our client needed a solution to quickly identify the culprits and alert both him and the police in real time when an incident occurred. While conventional CCTV and occasional patrols had been attempted, they were costly and required constant human monitoring. Additionally, CCTV only captured events after they happened, making it impossible for the police to intervene while the riders were still on his land. The CCTV images also lacked the quality necessary for proper identification. Our client needed a robust, real-time monitoring system that could:

  1. Detect, identify, and classify the motocross threat quickly.
  2. Provide high-quality images, actionable insights, and detailed intelligence reports to the police.

Providing real solutions

Recognising these challenges, the landowner enlisted our help to deploy a security solution that would resolve this issue. We arranged a comprehensive site assessment within 24 hours, outlining the capabilities of Orbis AI and the number of cameras needed to cover access points and problem areas. The landowner and his team were also trained on our Client Portal, which allowed them to monitor events in real time, set alert thresholds, and access incident reports.

We deployed cameras connected to the Orbis AI platform at all key access points and popular meeting spots for the trespassers. This network of strategically placed cloud-connected cameras provided several benefits:

  1. Automated Motocross Rider Detection: Using AI algorithms, the platform immediately recognised motocross riders and triggered a high-risk alarm as soon as the first rider was detected. Harmless incidents, like wildlife movement, were automatically categorised as low risk.
  2. Event Narration and Risk Assessment: Once a rider was detected, Orbis AI generated detailed event reports, captured high-definition images, and provided risk assessments. This information was instantly accessible to the client via their mobile app and desktop dashboard.
  3. Integration with Law Enforcement: Our Alarm Receiving Centre established a direct communication channel with the police, allowing rapid transmission of event details and visual evidence. This streamlined coordination helped reduce response times so that police could arrive while the riders were still on the land, securing crucial evidence. When the riders removed their helmets, the high-quality images were clear enough to positively identify the suspects.

Results that matter

Within three months of deployment, two incidents were detected, leading to the police charging four individuals under the Criminal Damage Act 1971 and several Public Order Offences. In addition to these charges, the platform achieved the following remarkable outcomes:

  1. No Further Reported Incidents: Since the second incident, there have been no further incidents of motocross activity on the client’s land.
  2. Faster Police Response: The detailed, real-time reports allowed the police to apprehend the riders while they were still on the property.
  3. Legal Protection: Our client now feels reassured, knowing they are no longer vulnerable to injury claims from the motocross riders. The riders, aware of the monitoring, now understand that riding on this land is simply not worth the risk.
