Temporary Works, Permanent Standards: A Smarter Way to Secure Sites

As part of the Silvertown Development, we were tasked with securing a critical substation using a fencing solution that met both long-term performance and temporary works compliance requirements. The system delivered durable, flexible, and sustainable protection – designed to remain in place for up to 10 years.

Meeting our customers’ needs

The project took place at the Silvertown Development – an iconic site with deep industrial heritage, located along the River Thames in London’s Royal Docks area. We were commissioned to install internal demarcation fencing to secure a substation within this large-scale regeneration scheme.

Substations are vital to maintaining a safe and reliable power supply across the site. They manage high-voltage electricity, typically stepping it down from 11kV to 230V for residential and commercial use.

As a cost-effective alternative to solid hoarding, fencing was chosen to provide robust security while improving visibility within the protected area. This visibility is key to deterring unauthorised access and allows for the swift detection of intruders – significantly reducing the risk of damage, injury, or potentially fatal incidents.

Our Challenges

  • Installing a fencing system that, while classified as temporary works, could remain in place for up to 10 years – delivering the durability and performance of a permanent solution.
  • Ensure full compliance with Temporary Works (TW) design standards, meeting all structural, safety, and regulatory requirements.
  • Build in future flexibility, allowing the fencing to be adjusted or realigned as site conditions evolved – without compromising the integrity of the TW design.
  • Completing the temporary substation installation on a tight deadline to secure this critical asset.

Providing real solutions

To meet the project’s unique demands, we deployed EnviroFence ATLAS – our net zero, off-the-shelf fencing system specifically designed to deliver the performance of a permanent structure while fully complying with Temporary Works (TW) design standards for a lifespan of up to 10 years.

This innovative solution gave the client the best of both worlds: the flexibility and classification of a temporary system, with the strength, stability, and visual quality expected of a long-term installation. It offered a smart, future-proof investment – providing ongoing value without the need for costly redesigns or replacements.

Beyond security and durability, EnviroFence ATLAS also helped the client stay on track with their sustainability objectives, contributing to their low-carbon targets from day one and reinforcing their commitment to environmentally responsible construction practices.

Results that matter

The project was successfully delivered on time, meeting the client’s urgent need for a rapid response. This was made possible through the deployment of EnviroFence ATLAS – our ‘ready-to-install’ solution designed for both speed and reliability. Its engineered flexibility proved critical on a dynamic site, allowing the fence line to be easily reconfigured as conditions evolved. This adaptability eliminated the need for costly redesigns or structural changes, while maintaining full compliance with Temporary Works (TW) design standards throughout the project lifecycle.

Beyond meeting structural and logistical requirements, EnviroFence ATLAS also delivered meaningful environmental benefits. As a net zero solution, it significantly reduced the project’s embodied carbon footprint, aligning with the client’s broader sustainability targets and demonstrating a clear commitment to low-carbon construction. From rapid mobilisation to long-term environmental value, the system played a vital role in supporting both the immediate and future needs of the site.
