Meeting Our Customers’ Needs

The team at Brighter Futures provide help, advice and support for people with varied and complex needs and much of this support is provided on a one-to-one basis. Their staff work within the community or at resident’s homes, frequently working alone with vulnerable people who can display unpredictable behaviour. Even staff who work in fixed establishments, such as hostels, often find themselves in lone working situations when they deal with incidents in different areas of a building alone.

Many of Brighter Future’s services operate 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year, and as a result, their team often work night shifts, sometimes on their own. Due to the high-risk nature of their working environments, the Brighter Futures team needed a reliable, cost-effective way to summon support in the event of a threatening situation, accident or emergency.

Providing Real Solutions

After initial consultation and a full assessment of each individual team, we trialled a range of devices and Apps to find out what best suited their needs. Following the trial, we discovered that our RedAlert SOS Alarm Fob service would be most appropriate for their team due to the ease of use and discreet nature of the device. Their team felt that a phone App may be seen by the customer as being threatening or obtrusive, so they opted for the highly discreet Fob that can be activated by a simple touch of a button.

Lone worker solutions become completely ineffective if the user isn’t completely comfortable with the device or operation, which is why it is so important to ensure the user is confident with the device first. Low device utilisation is one of the key problems faced by companies trying to protect their lone working staff, by supplying the right device, we can increase usage and ensure that users are fully protected within their roles.

The RedAlert SOS Alarm Fob is a fully compliant and accredited BS8484 solution, that when activated, will alert our 24/7 ARC (Alarm Receiving Centre) team to respond appropriately to the situation. Our ARC team have direct Police control room access and will bypass 999 services, saving valuable time in the case of an emergency for their frontline staff.

Our ARC team will support any Red Alert activations with an emergency response, but on occasions when staff may just feel vulnerable in a situation, they can speak to our team under our ‘Stay with me’ service which enables our ARC Operator to stay with the user until they feel in a safer situation. This reassures staff members that our team are available to support them 24/7/365 no matter what the situation may be.

Brighter Futures are highly impressed with the system and have now issued Fobs to a number of their teams across a range of departments including – Homeless team, Clubhouse Network, Women’s Criminal Justice team, Learning Disability team, Adult Sex Workers team, Safe Spaces team and Housing teams.

    Our online Sentry Portal allows Brighter Future’s management team access to all aspects of their lone worker team including device utilisation, user information, activations and downloadable reports, which are vital for managing and maintaining the safety of their team.

    What are your key benefits of Orbis’ solution?

    There are a number of key benefits to the lone worker solution we have chosen. The device is easy to use and not cumbersome. Leaving the amber alert is quick and simple and having the GPS tracking is a big bonus. The best asset of the device is its ability to be used discreetly. All our staff undertake lone working and conflict management training however, given that some of our customers can be unpredictable, a situation can still arise that a staff member is uncomfortable with.

    Being able to activate the device without potentially escalating a situation is a huge bonus that gives our staff comfort and confidence when working. This was one of the main reasons we chose this device rather than a phone app which could be seen by a customer as threatening.

    Can you provide an example of how your team use our solution?

    Another way that our teams use the lone working device is in the ‘stay with me’ mode. This has been used for a number of reasons including:

    • When working on an outreach programme and approaching a group of people you are unsure of.
    • When working in a fixed location but having to visit someone’s room or flat due to an issue.
    • When being called out and having to approach a site or building and being unsure of the situation.
