Case Study: East Riding of Yorkshire Council – Lone Worker Safety

Summary

  • The East Riding team required a lone working solution that covered various needs of both management and staff
  • Working with the team, we assessed their needs and provided both Smartphone Apps and dedicated Lone Worker devices to suit individual user requirements.
  • Behind the scenes, management were given access to our Customer Portal for real-time tracking of device usage, alerts and much more for accurate reporting and immediate feedback

Meeting Our Customers’ Needs

The East Riding team often work alone within the communities they serve. As they operate across numerous sites and multiple geographical areas, they require full monitoring of their daily activities and any potential risks from accidents whilst working alone.

Staff were often challenged with working in high-risk environments. These environments can range from dealing with people under the influence of substances, to working with tenants who experience mental illness. There are also times when difficult conversations need to take place, potentially over evictions, sanctions, warnings or tenancies. These types of scenarios put the East Riding team in a particularly high-risk category.

For these reasons, we were asked to deliver a lone working solution to provide safety and reassurance for their staff, so they are able to operate confidently within their daily roles.

Providing Real Solutions

Team managers identified 4 key challenges that we were to resolve for their staff –

  • Devices able to correctly identify individual staff
  • Establishing a management system to ensure accuracy of information
  • Rollout of training for users
  • Ensuring connectivity of devices for users

Training is essential for ensuring that both staff and management are confident in both the devices and the security processes. Once we understood their requirements, we conducted a full assessment of the working environments and tasks performed by their staff, so that we fully understand the challenges being faced.

Once the assessment process was complete, we then develop a customised plan to deliver relevant educational training to all end users detailing how the technology works, why they are being provided with the solution and how this will benefit each person as an individual.

Management were then provided access to our Customer Portal, which gives real-time updates on individual staff usage, locations, user alerts and much more. This gave them a full oversight where they could download reports on regular basis and quickly make any changes based on the information provided. Technical briefings to key council staff were also undertaken by a member of our team for feedback opportunities regarding the service.

To help combat poor signals in rural areas, we provided a roaming SIM to ensure coverage and connectivity for users with poor connectivity issues.

Results That Matter

Our team managed to complete this job from initial discussion to full alarm installation in under 48 hours, much to the delight of our customer. Since the security set up was installed, there has already been an attempted break in at one of the properties where the alarms were instantly triggered, deterring a burglary incident. Whilst there was some very minor window damage during the incident, the iTrap system undoubtably prevented a much costlier outcome.

“Orbis have always given excellent support to the Council during this contract. Numbers of staff using the system has increased during the contract period. It is anticipated that numbers will continue to increase in the future, particularly with the increasing numbers of staff working in an agile way, with less dependency on a traditional office base.”
