Supporting Student Safety

When we talk to new customers about people protection, the first thing that springs to mind is how can we protect their lone workers, which is completely understandable. Whilst most of this service focuses around protecting lone workers, we also work with a variety of companies to protect those who don’t necessarily fall under that classification. One such example is student welfare. Now this might sound a bit random, but it really does make sense when we break down the reasons why our RedAlert service is perfect for providing protection for students.

Supporting students

According to a report by insurance provider Aviva, almost 2 out of every 5 parents are concerned about their children’s wellbeing and security when moving away to University, as this is often the first time that families have been apart and parents are understandably quite anxious at the thought.

In a recent article by The Tab, a popular website covering student culture, there were a significantly high number of violent or sexual crimes reported against students between September 2019 to February 2020. Sexual assault scandals became front page news for even some of the most ‘prestigious’ of Universities, confirming that this really is a national problem and not an isolated issue.

As parents often finance or at least influence the decision around their children’s accommodation, the deciding factors from one property to another can hinge on the smallest of benefits and physical safety is certainly a major priority for parents and students alike.

Our people protection services can allow accommodation providers to offer their tenants full access to our RedAlert service and Alarm Receiving Centre team on a 24/7/365 basis. This service provides instant support for any emergency or threatening situations, or even for any accidents, slips, trips or falls, providing both parent and child with complete peace of mind that they have access to immediate support.

During the 2019/2020 academic year, there were over 2.5 million university students in the UK alone, making student accommodation a highly competitive landscape. We can work with accommodation providers to include the addition of tenant protection at a minimal cost, providing their student tenants with a service that’s specifically aimed at protecting their safety. Alternatively, this service could also drive additional revenue by offering tenants access to our protection services as an additional option. Either way, we can work with you to offer your tenants an additional layer of protection, helping to make your accommodation service stand out from the crowd.

Similarly, we can work with property managers from other sectors to offer their tenants our RedAlert service, as our solution can be customised for any property provider that house a number of tenants.

Supporting staff

Whilst we can work with providers to offer an end-user solution, it is also important for accommodation providers of all property sectors to prioritise the safety of their staff. With over 20 years’ experience in conducting individual risk-assessments, we have found that property management is often at higher risk than most companies are initially aware of. This is due to property agents often meeting new prospective tenants alone and in empty properties. This risk has only escalated during the pandemic due to social distancing and the operation of smaller teams due to furlough.

Probably the most high-profile case in the UK involved Suzy Lamplugh, a young Estate Agent who disappeared in July 1986 following a client meeting at a property in Fulham. Our highly trained consultants can work with you to design a customised plan to help protect your staff against the dangers associated with lone working in a high-risk environment.
